Íslenskar tölur Icelandic Numerals · Cheat Sheet

einn · tveir · þrír · fjórir · tuttugu

How the numerals work

The key point: 1-4 decline, while the other cardinal numbers usually stay unchanged. In compound numbers only the last part declines, if it is 1-4.

The main rule Cardinals

einn agrees with the noun in gender, number, and case.
tveir, þrír, fjórir have gender and case forms, but only in the plural.
From fimm upwards the numeral is usually invariable.
einn dagur, ein bók, eitt hús
tveir dagar, tvær bækur, tvö hús

Compound numbers Tip

Tens + units are usually joined with og: tuttugu og einn.
If the number ends in 1-4, it is exactly that last part that agrees.
tuttugu og einn maður (21 men)
tuttugu og ein kona (21 women)
þrjátíu og tvö hús (32 houses)

Usage

Short rules for real-life contexts: time, dates, money, and nouns.

Time Practice

With clock time the neuter form is normally used: klukkan eitt, klukkan tvö, klukkan þrjú, klukkan fjögur.
Klukkan er tvö — it's two o'clock.
Ég kem klukkan hálf þrjú — I'm coming at 2:30 (hálf þrjú means "halfway to three").

Dates

The day of the month is expressed with an ordinal number: fyrsti júní, annar júní, þriðji júní.
In written dates a period follows the digit: 1. júní, 12. desember.

Money and measures

With a noun, the form of the numeral depends on the noun's gender and case: ein króna, tvær krónur, þrjár krónur.
From 5 upwards the numeral does not change: fimm krónur, tíu dagar, hundrað orð.
