How to determine gender quickly

Work from top to bottom: from the most reliable signs down to heuristics.

Test 1 Article and pronoun

GenderArticleExamplePronoun
kk. masculine-innhesturinnhann
kvk. feminine-inbókinhún
hk. neuter-iðhúsiðþað

Algorithm Decision tree

Is there a definite article? -inn = masculine, -in = feminine, -ið = neuter.

Is the word a compound? Gender comes from the last component: bókasafn is neuter because safn is neuter.

Is there a reliable suffix? Check -ari, -ingur, -ing, -un, -lag and others.

Look at the ending. -ur/-ll/-nn is usually masculine; -a is usually feminine; a bare consonant is often feminine or neuter.

Check the exceptions. Especially words in -ur, kinship terms in -ir, and body parts in -a.

Anchors Three main landmarks

Masculine

  • -ll, -nn are often masculine too

Sex Natural gender often matches grammatical gender

maður - masculine, kona - feminine, faðir and bróðir - masculine, móðir, dóttir, systir - feminine.

But: barn "child" - neuter, skáld "poet" - neuter, hetja "hero" - feminine.

Word structure Gender of compound words

In compound words, gender is determined by the last component.

bókasafn - neuter, because safn is neuter.
járnbraut - feminine, because braut is feminine.
kvenmaður - grammatically masculine, because the last component is maður.

Groups Letters and countries
